You should power down your PlayStation 5 when not in use to save power. Shutting down your PS5 can also resolve performance and gaming issues. If your PS5 is overheating, turning it off for a few minutes can lower the console’s temperature. How to Turn Off PS5?

Although shutting down the PS5 is straightforward, first-time users sometimes struggle with it. The PS5 offers various power options for shutting down, restarting, or putting the console to sleep. We’ll show how the PS5 power options work, starting with different ways to turn off the console.

Note: The methods in this tutorial apply to all versions of the PlayStations 5 console—Disc, Slim, Pro, or Digital Edition.

1. Turn Off PS5 from the Power Menu

You can turn off your console from the power menu in the PS5 control center. Here’s how:

  1. Press the PlayStation button on the DualSense controller to open the control center.

  1. Select the Power icon in the bottom-right corner of your TV/monitor. You should see these three options: “Enter Rest Mode,” “Turn Off PS5,” and “Restart PS5.”
  2. Select Turn Off PS5 to shut down your PS5 console.

The “Restart PS5” option shuts down your PS5 console and turns it back on immediately.

2. Power Off PS5 Without Your Controller

All PlayStation 5 models have a dedicated power button on the front. For models with a disc drive, you’ll find the power button adjacent to the eject button. The PlayStation Support website has illustrations showing the location of the PS5 console buttons.

If your PS5 controller is faulty or missing, you can shut down your PS5 by pressing and holding the Power button for 3-5 seconds. Wait a few seconds for the device to shut down.

Shut Down vs. Rest Mode: What’s Different?

Turning off your PlayStation 5 closes all applications and powers down the console. Nothing works on the console until you turn it back on.

Rest Mode is a low-power or energy-saving feature that puts your PS5 console to sleep without shutting it down. By default, your PS5 automatically enters Rest Mode after:

  1. 20 minutes of inactivity on the home screen, during gameplay, or when using an app.
  2. 4 hours of inactivity during media playback—when watching videos or listening to music.

In Rest Mode, your PS5 suspends active apps/games and disables audio/video output. However, the console stays connected to the internet and supplies power to the USB ports. So, your PS5 can charge your DualSense controller and download updates while in Rest Mode. Additionally, Rest Mode allows for the charging of connected devices while reducing power consumption.

Note that the more activities your PS5 performs in Rest Mode, the more power it consumes. However, you can customize features available in Rest Mode to reduce power consumption and lower your PS5’s power usage.

How to Put Your PS5 in Rest Mode

Press the PlayStation (PS) button on your controller, select the Power icon in the control center and select Enter Rest Mode

Alternatively, press and hold the Power button on your PS5 and let go after a single beep.

Your PS5 should blink an orange light as it enters Rest Mode. The indicator light stays solid orange when Rest Mode is active. Also, your TV might display a black screen or a “no input/signal” message.

How NOT to Turn Off Your PS5

Avoid shutting down your PS5 console by unplugging its power cable or turning off the wall outlet/socket. SONY warns against unplugging your PS5 when the power indicator is lit or blinking.

Doing so might corrupt system files or brick your PS5. Instead, turn off your PS5 from the power menu or use the physical power button before unplugging the AC power cord.

As mentioned earlier, restarting or powering off your PS5 can fix performance glitches and gaming issues. So, if you have issues running solo or multiplayer games, reboot your PS5 and run the game again.
